About the journal

Legal history as an argument, not only a chronicle

Acta Juris Historici will publish scholarship that takes legal history seriously as argument, as an institutional achievement, and as a form of historical understanding.

The journal welcomes work in the tradition of historical legal scholarship—Roman law, canon law, the law of the middle ages and the early modern period, the history of codification, and Chinese legal history—as well as scholarship that situates law in its social, economic, and intellectual context. It will publish comparative legal history, legal thought and institutions, and work that crosses disciplinary boundaries.

The journal is being developed as an independent, international forum. It is committed to careful editorial work, serious engagement with argument, and scholarship that is accessible to readers across jurisdictions and traditions.
